The new Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) trailer offers fans a first look at the villain Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) wearing his signature mask. When Margot Robbie made her debut as Harley Quinn in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, she quickly became a fan-favorite. The Oscar-nominated actress was nearly universally praised for her turn as the DC villainess, and Warner Bros. was quick to begin developing a number of spinoff ideas focused on Robbie’s Harley Quinn. The first to enter production was Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey movie, which sees Harley join forces with DC heroes Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez).
The first Birds of Prey movie trailer focused on Harley Quinn, almost to the exclusion of the Birds themselves. However, it did tease the film’s story, as Harley unites with the heroes in an effort to save Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from the evil Roman Sionis aka Black Mask and Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina). With all the main actors contracted for sequels, Birds of Prey could potentially launch its own franchise, one that doesn’t necessarily include Harley Quinn in all future installments. Now, the full Birds of Prey movie trailer is here, offering even more footage from the upcoming DC movie.
Warner Bros. released the new Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) trailer, which can be viewed below. Though McGregor has appeared in the previous Birds of Prey trailer and other teasers, fans had yet to see him don the character’s black mask – until now. Check out the trailer below.
Like the previous teaser, this new Birds of Prey movie trailer focuses more on Harley Quinn than other members of the titular team. Still, we do learn more about their characters and why exactly Harley assembles this particular team: It’s because each of them has pissed off Black Mask in their own way. Cassie Cain robbed him, Black Canary “betrayed” him, Huntress “killed his BFF” and police detective Renee is building a case against the crime boss. This explains why a villain/anti-hero like Harley Quinn would team up with the others, because they share an enemy.
As for Birds of Prey’s Black Mask, there’s still plenty we don’t know about him. We now know that he’s the reason Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey team up in the first place, but based on the trailers so far, he seems to be a fairly typical – if bombastic – crime boss. It’s also not clear why exactly Black Mask wants Harley Quinn dead. But with Harley Quinn having dumped Joker at the start of the movie, it’s clear fans will learn more about her as a character separate from Mr. J – and that includes whatever beef she has with Black Mask.
With less than a month left until Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) hits theaters, fans will get to revisit Robbie’s fan-favorite character and meet all the new DC characters Yan’s movie introduces to the DCEU soon enough.
