The nominations for the Producers Guild Awards have arrived, with Oscar frontrunners like Parasite, The Irishman, and Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood landing key nominations for the outstanding producer award. Of all the awards ceremonies and galas that precede the Oscars, the PGAs are the biggest bellwether yet, signaling which films will likely secure coveted best picture nominations.
The 10 films that comprised this category also include Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, and Todd Phillips’ Joker, which recently fared well at the Golden Globes. The category also includes Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, and James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari.
Sam Mendes’ 1917 also made the cut, just days after scooping up best director and best drama at the Golden Globes, a surprise success that has shaken up the race and caused many to wonder if the daring World War I film’s Oscar chances have radically transformed. Previously, experts predicted the best picture race would be a fight between The Irishman and Once Upon a Time, with Tarantino’s love letter to Hollywood pacing slightly ahead. Parasite was also at the top of some prediction lists, thanks to Joon-ho’s undeniably excellent work. However, after the Globes, 1917 has shifted in the rankings, elbowing its way to the front of the pack.
The Producers Guild Awards nominations were also announced for animated film, including Missing Link, Frozen II, and Toy Story 4. Nominations for TV drama were announced, with HBO scooping up four out of five nominations thanks to Big Little Lies, Game of Thrones, Succession, and Watchmen. The sole outlier? Netflix’s The Crown. HBO was less dominant in the comedy category, though Veep and Barry were nominated, alongside Fleabag, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Schitt’s Creek.
Oscar nominations voting, meanwhile, ends Tuesday and the nominees will be announced on January 13. From there, it‘ll be an endless series of campaigns, galas, and mixers as nominees duke it out for every last possible vote. The Producers Guild Awards will take place on January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium.
