Even after Awkwafina took home a Golden Globe for lead actress in a movie for her performance as Billi in The Farewell on Sunday, her grandma knows how to keep her grounded. During an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday, Awkwafina revealed that her grandma walked out during a special screening of the film. “She got up, basically at the most pivotal part,” she told Ellen.
The comedian went on to reveal that her grandma had the most grandmotherly reason for leaving at that exact moment: “I gotta cook.” Seems legit. While Awkwafina was initially confused, she went on to explain that her grandma later sat through the whole movie in theaters and has attended all of her screenings since.
