Why rice water is the beauty ingredient you should know about

At home beauty can be as simple as going through your kitchen cabinets and combine those unsuspecting ingredients.

We’re all too familiar with the honey and cinnamon face masks, the lemon juice mixture used to combat spots and the benefits of egg whites to tighten pores, but rice water is another one of those day-to-day ingredients that can enhance your beauty routine.

Starting with your facial skincare routine, it turns out that the water that’s left over from washing rice actually contains the antioxidant, Ferulic Acid. This is the acid primarily known for its anti-ageing properties, but it also supports the effectiveness of vitamins A, C and E. This rice water also contains allantoin, which is a soothing agent that promotes healing of the skin.

Moving on to your hair care regime, rice water can work really well to help improve the condition of your hair. The water is carbohydrate based, and so Inositol, a carbohydrate sugar that strengthens your hair. Inositol is typically used to help those dealing with thinning hair and balding.

How do we make rice water?

It is as simple as it sounds, involving boiling rice in water, and measurements are all up to you. A suggested ratio could be ½ a cup of uncooked rice to 2 cups of water to get the most out of one boil.

The important thing to note is that the rice should be rinsed before you boil it, to get rid of any impurities.

Once boiled, pour into a storage container and it should last for approximately a week.
