Interview with Juliah Barreto

Hello Juliah! Thank you for your time. You released your first EP this year. Congrats! Can you share what that experience has been like for you?

First of all, thank YOU for the opportunity!

On my first EP I wanted to deliver to my public something raw, intimate, genuine and imperfect. I wanted people to connect with me as the imperfect human I am, before I presented my whole artistic side, as the girl on the moon. Music is the representation of us, and we’re not perfect, so music shouldn’t always be perfect.

“The Acoustic Session” was a fun recording I did with my band at the time to eternize a set of songs that we have been performing for a while, and the crowd always loved it, always giving me amazing feedback. I wanted to give something to those people who’s been going to my shows, because they were there in the beginning, and in every single show everyone always showed me a lot of support and love, and I’ll always be thankful for that!

Having people believing in me and in my music is the most rewarding thing to me, they’re the most important part in my career. Doesn’t matter how hard I work, how good I can be, without those people supporting me and showing love, I’ll never reach where I want to with my music. So thank you, everyone!

Where do you record and are you self-produced?

I usually record and produce everything in my bedroom. For some songs like the EP, my single “Rule”, and collaborations where the producer needs my voice as clean as possible, I go in the studio to get more quality sound.

How do you work through periods when you can’t seem to come up with any ideas? Do you have any tips to work through writers block?

I’m the kind of songwriter who likes to write every single day, even if it’s a terrible idea, a terrible rhyme or melody, I like to put something down just for practice, and that, honestly, helps me a lot through my writers block, because I can always go back to old notes and get inspiration from them, or produce a sound for them, and don’t worry about writing. My tip is to don’t stress out, even if it lasts a month or more, enjoy every single moment you live, because they’ll end up being inspiration when you write, and living them at its most is the only way you can relive them through a song. Try to do things and go places that inspire you.

What do you hope listeners walk away with after hearing your music?

I hope that they feel like coming back to their own universe, to earth, with a new perspective in mind. I want people to go to another space when they listen to my music. Throughout all these years doing gigs all around, I always have someone telling me that my voice took them to another place, and that, to me, is the most beautiful thing you can tell me, because I feel like I achieved my goal with my music.

You only get to listen to one song on repeat for a month – who are you picking?

Not wanting to sound smug haha but I’d choose a song I wrote this year, that I’ll be releasing on New Years. It’s called “Got Me Feeling”.

Last year I released a song that I produced and recorded in my bedroom, with my very cheap and poor quality mic, and made a video with footages that I took along the year. It was compilation of moments that I love watching because it brings me back to 2018. And I loved doing that so much that accidentally I did the same thing one of these days, and decided to make it my new years tradition. So, stay tuned and check out my song “Lust”. Available on my website and SoundCloud!

Anything else you would like to share?

I have a lot of stories to tell in 2020, and for that to happen, I need a lot of support! So, anything helps! Stay tuned! I’m really excited about this material I’m working on for you guys!

Where can we find you on IG?

You can find me @itisjuliah. Hope you enjoy the ride, and thank you for the space to talk about my passion!

Much love from the girl on the moon,
