You’ve got your daily facial skincare routine down, but we all too often overlook our body care routine. With winter well and truly upon us, we’ve been desperately searching for ways to slough away our dead skin in favour of a healthy glow.
Thankfully GLAMOUR columnist Jen Atkin is the hair stylist and beauty boss extraordinaire with all the answers. Here, she shares her ultimate body care guide to getting the glow in the colder months.
Winter is wreaking havoc with our skin, how can we add moisture back in? What is a 5-step body care regime you swear by?
I always say that I don’t have time for baths, so I’m a shower girl. I’m constantly in a rush – in the morning especially. I’ll have a quick shower with my Body Cleanser, the smell is super zesty so it’s the perfect pick me up. We left out the skin-stripping ingredients and only put in the best: balancing probiotics and a hydrating oil blend (rose hip oil and jojoba seed oil) that gently cleanse and brighten skin.
You definitely don’t need to overcomplicate it too much with your body care routine. Keep it simple, but be consistent with it. Don’t get lazy! I moisturise day and night after showering without fail. I love my Body Crème because it has Cupuaçu Butter and Coconut Oil, so it’s perfect for soothing dry skin. But there are so many amazing body moisturisers out there that don’t break the bank. It’s important to exfoliate too. I can get bumpy skin on my legs and exfoliating regularly really helps. It just makes you feel clean and fresh. That’s about it for my daily routine, I’m too busy for anything else!
You have a scalp scrub, what can people do to boost their scalp and hair this winter to add gloss?
Scrubs and oils will be your fix. Rose Hair & Body Oil is so multifunctional and great for locking in moisture, I use it on all of my clients. Use a generous amount, but always keeping it about an inch away from the scalp for that glassy (not greasy) look. Try using a hair mask weekly too – it’s boring, but it honestly really works to get hair hydrated again & keep it in a healthy state! Another tip… You want to make sure you don’t overly wash your hair, people don’t realise but it can actually lead to dryness and during the winter months particularly, you want to avoid!
What are your favourite wellness hacks for staying healthy in winter?
Start from within – I really strongly believe that you will not see changes in your hair by just doing external remedies. You need to do internal as well, it’s why I created a supplement for Dry, Thinning, and Oily hair. I always recommend my clients eat healthy fats for stronger, shinier hair. Walnuts are rich in omega oils, biotin, vitamin E, and copper which keeps your hair colour looking rich. I’m also big on self-care this year, really sharpening my tools to prioritise myself, my mental and physical health. That means learning when to say no to fun holiday plans, listening to your body when you need to stay in, take a bath, do a mask, see a friend, Netflix and chill, etc..
What is a 5-step haircare regime that will overhaul tired locks?
Tired hair wakes up in the shower… Start by giving the scalp a little love using Scalp & Body Scrub, we often forget about the scalp and it needs to be nourished and healthy for follicles to flourish. Next, use Treatment Masque from root to ends to infuse tired hair with hydration. I’d try to let it sit for at least 5 minutes if you can handle it – maybe save this for shaving day? Then rinse with cool water. After the shower, comb out clean hair using a wide toothed comb and change up the way your hair is normally parted, it can instantly create a new look minus hours at the salon.
Air Dry Foam is the no make-up look for hair. It can remove frizz, add hydration and shine without a drop of heat. It can even give a little texture for my finer-haired girls so blast your locks with a bit of this mousse. Lastly, once you’re dry, Wave Spray (always)… It gives the “just out of the ocean” look, it can create instant fullness and texture without heat. Fun tip: apply some both on the front and back of hands rather than directly in the hair, it prevents over applying and gives more control over where the product goes.
What are your favourite at-home self care remedies?
Dry body brushing is great to do at-home – it completely removes the dry dead skin cells from your skin’s surface, unclogging your pores and improving overall appearance. On a non-beauty note, I’m also a big believer in the power of community, so bringing friends or family into your home, cooking together, sharing a meal, hosting game night, spending time together in cozy colder months.. Personally, that’s an insanely impacting way for my husband and I to tap into some good, solid self-care in our favourite place – home!
