Princess Diana of Themyscria, sometimes known as Diana Prince, sometimes known as Wonder Woman and, in this timeline, know by all as Gal Gadot, burst on the Internet late Sunday with a new trailer for next summer’s Wonder Woman 1984. The marketing materials were unleashed at Comic-Con Experience CCXP 2019 in São Paulo, Brazil. Gadot and director Patti Jenkins were in attendance.
Strap on your boots and check this out.
These trailers are designed to wow you but also not tell you anything, and on that front it does a great job. Gadot once again looks amazing, and it is fair to say that hers is the best replicated “classic suit” from comic book lore in a movie adaptation ever. Disagree if you want, but the Lasso of Truth reveals it to be so!
Chris Pine is back even though Steve Trevor was supposed to be dead. Eh, they’ll figure something out. Kristen Wiig is playing Wonder Woman’s rival The Cheetah, but so far we only see her as Diana’s friend. (Work associate? Hard to know.) Pedro Pascal, currently knocking pop culture dead on The Mandalorian, is the villain Max Lord, but, my God, the real star is all that 80s production design.
There’s a big action sequence at a very 80s-looking mall (what up Waldenbooks?!?), there’s vector graphics flashing all over the place and the whole trailer is set to a remix of Blue Monday by New Order.
If you need a little extra of that, here’s the Manchester, UK band performing the song on Top of the Pops just one year before Wonder Woman 1984 is set.
