New Ryan Reynolds Action Hero Makes Trailer Debut

We’re not even through the Holidays but that doesn’t mean next summer’s movies shouldn’t start their marketing.

Ryan Reynolds, still in the midst of his successful and snarkily self-aware Deadpool series, is hoping to delight crowds with more meta humor in Free Guy.

The trailer is a little confusing at first, but by the end I figured out that it’s basically The Truman Show but for video games. Reynolds is Guy, a “non-player character” as gamers call the unimportant people in the background. But one day he decides he’s tired of being shot at and takes action within the Grand Theft Auto-esque world in which he lives. Whether or not he will then go on to “fight for the Users!” like Bruce Boxleitner in Tron remains to be seen.

Free Guy is directed by Shawn Levy, who made both Night at the Museum films and the actually quite agreeable boxing robot movie Real Steel with Hugh Jackman. What with the kids being unable to put down their Gameboys for five minutes and have a conversation with visiting uncles, I suspect that this movie will be a hit. Then again, I was the one who thought Adam Sandler in Pixels would conquer the box office. Remember Pixels? Where Q*bert wore a tuxedo?

Check out the trailer and see if it moves your joystick. The title works on two levels.
