Interview Jesse Rundle

Hello Jesse, we appreciate you taking the time to do our interview.  Your new single Nomad Exquisite – is wonderfully unique! Tell us about the inspiration behind the song.

Thank you. I was reading, Harmonium, by Wallace Stevens and this poem about Florida really stood out to me. It has all these lush natural images but isn’t just another one of those “oh! nature” poems. It feels like there’s really something going on. So I wrote a song to it. It needed some rhythmic energy to capture the mood and fit the meter of the poem so I alternated between a couple different rhythms throughout the song.

The Nomad Exquisite video is truly beautiful, having been shot in the Everglades National Park. Please tell us more about the meaning behind this and your motivation for this video.

The video makes the images in the poem that much more direct and real. Just seeing a few birds and an alligator actually in Florida is interesting and beautiful to just about everybody. It kind of sets the stage for letting someone read the words if they want to. The video was all shot by the staff at the Everglades National Park and I just compiled it and arranged it to the music. I love the different scenes in the video and I also like the lo-fi aspect of it all. It’s still requires you to use a bit of imagination.

Tell us more about the music scene in Boise!

Treefort is really the center of Boise music. It’s an incredible festival that has its own vibe that’s unique to Boise. The entire downtown area turns into a continuous concert for five days and everybody discovers bands they never thought they would like. It’s beautiful. We’ve also got some great old time and folk bands around town and some house shows, so there are plenty of opportunities to see live music.

Who has been your greatest musical inspiration?

I have no idea, there are so many. The first person that comes to mind is the guitarist from Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood. His music as a part of that band and his solo work have been a huge influence and always challenge me.

Where can we find out more about your upcoming show dates and more on line?

I put my shows up on Facebook and Instagram. I have a 9-to-5 day job and I spent the last year working on this album so I haven’t played much outside of Boise yet.

The second single, Captain Profundo, comes out this Friday, December 6. You can pre-save it here: https://ffm.to/profundo.opr.

It’s got an entirely different energy than Nomad. It’s got some crazy time signatures and weird harmonies and the song is based on this almost-absurdist Stevens poem. It’s a ton of fun and I just listen to it on repeat sometimes.

I also just released a Christmas album on Friday with a bunch of musician friends in Boise. It’s even got my sister singing harmonies on Silent Night. It was a lot of fun to put together. The idea was to do a few tunes that are not the normal made-for-shopping Xmas tunes. So if you’re into that, this might be for you.
