School Districts Stepping Away From Halloween

With Halloween rapidly approaching, one’s thoughts go towards ghosts, goblins, candy and the overall sense of dread that so many movies, scary stories, and folklore provide.

That is unless you are Principal Michelle Cooney from Evanston, Illinois who seems to be getting rid of Halloween altogether.

The Evanston/Skokie School District 65 in Illinois has offered up a myriad of reasons why they are stepping away from the holiday. Chief among them they feel that it could potentially alienate and exclude students and staffers who don’t observe for personal and/or religious reasons

Another reason they feel Halloween should be done away with is that the tradition of dressing up in costume to go to school could end up having a negative impact on folks who are in a financial situation that may not allow them to participate all the way.

Officials in Illinois aren’t the only ones, school districts in Virginia, Wisconsin, and Vermont are also stepping away. They are even replacing the holiday with made-up ones like “Hat Day”. Remember the rich tradition of “Hat Day”?

What do you think about the sudden move to step away from a long-standing holiday let us know in the comments!
